What’s the one thing that goes where you go, day in and night out? Chances are, it’s your handbag. Whether it’s a studded backpack, a croc-embossed satchel or a furry cross-body bag, our handbags are accessories that see us through the daily grind, loaded with necessities big and small. But they can also make a style statement … here are the newest ways to update one of our best fashion friends that goes everywhere we go. After all, most of us like to have more than just one good “friend,” right?

–The Office Mate: The handbags we take to the office usually must do double duty in a big way. We stash laptops, tablets, phones, wallets and cosmetics (sometimes even an extra pair of shoes) in these carry-alls. There are lots of ways to load up on roomy bags with lots of style. Oversized handbags abound this fall, providing a solution to packing up lots of electronics and other necessities. Choose from huge, soft hobos (neon colors are hot) or more structured satchels embossed in animal prints or shining in lacquered leathers. You can even “hook” up several bags and clip them all together, via the trend created by Gucci and its innovative “build-a-bag” designs.

–The Travel Companion: While the “really” big bags may come in handy when traveling, the smaller bags are often the ones that we count on to move us quickly through airports when less is more, and being weighed down is not stylish at all. Your best friend in this case may be a slim tote that has a shoulder strap to free up your hands. Cross-body bags may also come in handy for organizing travel papers, cash and cards. There are lots of new wallets, too, that include built-in chargers and extra security protection. Choose a bright new color like red, the favorite color of the season, to make finding credentials fast even easier. And if you’re a backpack girl, you’re in luck. Backpacks are no longer just for hiking, but get dressed up this fall in lots of glitter and glam, some studded or sprinkled with crystals.

–The Fashionista: Chances are, this friend will be covered up in fuzzy fur this fall and winter. And her handbag will be no different. Or she’ll tote around a statement-making logo bag branded with her favorite designer’s name or a graphic design stamped onto the bag emblazoned with stars or stripes or graffiti art. In other words, the embellished handbag will be the “it” bag of the season, and even though it may only be around for a year, it’s all about putting the fun back in fashion.

–The Brunch Bunch: These girlfriends are also about having a good time, but they get a little more serious about it. Their handbags for fall are shaping up to be a little more vintage-inspired. Boxy, top-handle bags like the ones our grandmothers relied on are the accessories to buy now, especially if you’re making an investment. And we all know, there are plenty of handbags that carry a hefty price tag. But the newest architectural inspired designs are going to be around for a while. Check out the round hat-box designs if you really want to brunch with the best.

–The Party Girl: She is definitely not going to show up for cocktails lugging a huge bucket bag (if she can possibly help it). These friends are going to snap up a great new clutch or evening bag that has just enough room for a lipstick and credit card…and yes, of course, a cellphone. Gotta be able to track Uber, after all. But the “tiny” micro bags are the perfect party accessory. The latest festive purses will be all about shimmer and metallic shine. Hand-held clutches may provide more room for valuables, but small evening bags with straps may ensure that you can party all night long and never have to leave your best “friend” alone.

Vintage-inspired handbags are trending this fall. The “trunk” collection at Mulberry is inspired by the design of vintage hatboxes. www.mulberry.com.
